Protecting and Promoting Sustainable Seaweed Harvesting

Immediate Release

Councillor Noel Thomas convened a meeting in the Dáil on Tuesday between two seaweed harvester representatives from Conamara, Michael O Curraoin and Kevin Thornton, and Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, Laura O'Brien, CEO of Mara, Eoin Leahy, Director of Policy and External Affairs of Mara

The meeting proved highly productive, with crucial discussions centered around the future of seaweed harvesting along Ireland's coastline. Laura O'Brien confirmed that Mara is in the early stages of consultation with the relevant department regarding regulations, marking a timely opportunity for dialogue with local harvesters.

Councillor Thomas highlighted Mara’s crucial role in regulating and safeguarding the maritime coast. He proposed that sustainable and eco-friendly seaweed harvesting should prioritise local harvesters. "If managed effectively, the seaweed harvesting industry presents an excellent opportunity for job creation, allowing people to sustain their families within their communities and help preserve coastal villages," he remarked.

Deputy Fitzmaurice underscored the importance of equitable rights for local seaweed harvesters, drawing parallels with turbary rights for bog turf harvesting. He emphasized that if harvesters possess the right to collect seaweed, they should not be required to obtain a license.

Both harvester representatives echoed Deputy Fitzmaurice's sentiments, advocating for local stewardship in seaweed harvesting. They asserted that local harvesters are best positioned to self-regulate, as overharvesting would compromise future yields.

Mara's representatives expressed openness to further discussions and agreed to appoint a liaison dedicated to communicating with seaweed harvesters in future engagements. This initiative was warmly welcomed by all participants, fostering hopes for meaningful collaboration aimed at formulating legislation that supports sustainable seaweed harvesting practices in the years to come.
